FOR SALE - EXTREMELY RARE - Regency Period ( Think, Jane Austen), Wedding Gown + Bridal Slippers, Bridal Stockings and Embroidered, Goat Skin Gloves, with Family Provenance !
I purchased this lot, along with some other items of the same period, from a family in the UK. I actually rescued these from going in the rubbish bin, due to family squabbles !
Its incredibly rare to find a complete bundle, from the same source !
I was going to restore the lot, but I have MS and can no longer take on such tasks. Im a retired seamstress and garment technician, and I specialize in antique garments, and restoring them.
The wedding gown is of the Regency period (1807), but has been altered several times in its life, most likely as gowns were often handed down to other family members. At a good guess and from analyzing the alterations, I believe this was used right up until the 1830s, and that includes the slippers, stockings & glove's.
The gown is in desperate need of restoration or preservation, as its made from, raw brushed silk, which is a natural protein fiber, and is naturally prone to breaking down, which is precisely what hat happened to the gown, mainly the skirt section, the bodice is in remarkably good condition for its age and the fact that this bundle was very poorly stored by the family. This is restorable, but is a lengthy project, for someone with patience and passion. Even if you've never had experience in restoring and antique garment, it can be done, there's lots of YouTube info/help Vida etc, but this can also be left 'as its', and perhaps box framed to prevent it, or inside a large glass cake dome. gala gowns
The gown features stunning hand made tambour style lace on the sleeve cuffs, its original metal stays, some of its original eyes (Hook & Eye), and please keep in mind this is all hand stitches, no machine stitching !
The ivory silk bridal slippers are to die for & highly sought after in their own right by collectors, and VERY RARE ! These are completely handmade and hand stitched too, and are truly exquisite, dainty and very special.
To go with the silk slippers, are the loom woven, french made silk stockings ! These are just as special and rare as the slippers, and feature a gorgeous typically Georgian/Regency period even detail along the leg/ankle section.
These feel divine, and are exquisite and beautifully made and have been loved and also hand down, as the come with the most beautiful and skillful hand stitched repairs !
Then there's the gorgeous, but tiny, silver thread, embroidered, goat skin, bridal gloves.
The gloves have done completely apart at the seams, due to time, and being originally hand stitched, with a fine silk thread, and naturally breaking down.
I'm giving someone in Australia to own this bundle, as this is a rare find here. Unfortunately of it doesn't sell here, I will listen on eBay for the Japanese market, as they are huge on anything related to the Regency period/Jane Austen, period, and pay big prices whatever the condition.
The gown, slippers, stockings, gloves, are all very small in size, as people were much smaller than people of today, by modern sizing, the gown would be about a size 7, slippers & Silk stockings size 5 - 6
I'm selling the entire set for $250, which is cheap for very sought after garments from the regency period, even in their current condition, the slippers would sell for more than that by themselves.
Please feel free to ask anyone questions !
